Save Green & Give Green this Holiday

We all want to save money this holiday season but can we do our part and reduce our impact on the environment at the same time? Yes we can. All of the simple and small things such as recycling our gift wrap and using a timer for the Christmas lights do make a difference. Here are a few more simple and unique ideas to consider if you want to save green and give green:

Skip the Holiday cards. Send an e-mail instead with some recent family photos. It's a nice way to stay in touch, plus you'll save trees, time, fuel and money.

Shop online. No driving from store to store, no long lines to wait in and you probably won't get hurt. Look for eco-friendly, green and fair trade coupons on shopping sites such as Pristine Planet to save some money on your holiday gifts. Sea Glass Organic is offering a coupon (code GREEN15) for 15% off any order of $30 or more through Thursday, Dec 4th, 2008. Check out our Green Gifts section for more unique ideas.

Look in the closet (you know the one). I'll bet you'll find enough leftover wrapping paper, gift bags, tags & bows. If not, consider using magazines. Does it even need to be wrapped? Make your own gift tags cut from cardboard boxes and twine. Your creative touch will not go unnoticed. Reusable gift bags are also a nice option.

Look for gifts with minimal packaging. All that excessive and wasteful packaging cannot be recycled and will end up in the landfill. Look for natural, recyclable or biodegradable packaging.

Decorate your Ficus Tree. Not terribly traditional but hey, if you've already got a tree...

Remove Hard Water Deposits the Eco Friendly Way

I have been forever searching for some type of product to remove drain clogs from the bathtub and sink and something to remove hard water deposits from the sink drain and toilet bowl. Oh- and they need to be environmentally friendly. Not an easy task when it comes to drain clogs! Well, I have found them and they work.

The first product is a drain clog remover called a Drain Stick which you can find at your local hardware store. I was actually looking for a product called "ZipIt" (which they didn't have) but they are similar. I spent the $5.49 and decided to try it. It's a long piece of plastic that has a serrated tip that you push right down the drain, twist it and remove. You don't even have to remove the stop. Be prepared to dispose of all the gunk it pulls up. It's a simple, inexpensive and eco-friendly way to remove clogs and can be used over and over again.

The second product is called a "Pumie" which I found at a local grocery store. This is for removing stubborn stains, rust and hard water deposits from toilet bowls. It is 100% natural pumice, cost about $8.00 and it works! I was thrilled to find an eco friendly way to remove these hard water deposits. The "Pumie" is abrasive but safe for porcelain bowls, around pets and for the environment. It is recommended to test an area on colored porcelain bowls first.

No more pouring money and toxic chemicals down the drain!

An Amazing Surfer Story

What a pleasant surprise this morning. Our local Sunday paper headline was not of the usual gloom and doom. It read "Blind Man Makes Waves" and has a picture of local Carolina Beach resident Zac Adair riding a wave on his surfboard.

Zac Adair was hit by a taxicab at full speed which resulted in a fractured neck, broken legs and he was put on life support for a week. He recovered, but in May 2004 he ran into the side of his truck and had a stroke which damaged his optic nerves and left him blind.

He lost his job, hobbies and girlfriend. Eight months later, inspired by his father, he got back on his feet. He got back on a surfboard for the first time last year. He now lives in Carolina Beach, NC with his girlfriend (who helps him catch those waves) goes to college and is once again a surfer. Check out the video it's amazing.

You can also read the whole story at Star News Online.

Clean the Air in Your Home Naturally

How can you improve your air quality at home? Plants, plants and more plants. Just say no to fake plants. Real live plants naturally remove toxins, pollutants and help balance indoor humidity. Just one plant is needed to clean the air in a 10 square yard area, so in an average living room, just a few plants will do the job.

So what plants are best? Personally, I think any common, easy care houseplant is good. You can find most of these indoor plants at your local nursery or home store: Pothos, Ivy, Spider Plant, Dracaena (Janet Craig), Chinese Evergreen, Corn Plant, Peace Lily, Palms, and the ever popular Ficus. You might even find my favorite indoor plant which is the easy care Ponytail Palm (pictured).

Choose plants that look healthy. No yellow or dead leaves. Check the undersides of leaves and soil for possible insects. Most of these plants are used because they adapt well to indoor conditions such as lower light. The most common problem with caring for plants is OVER watering! Follow the plant tag recommendations and check your plant once a week, lift the grow pot- does it feel heavy? Is the soil wet on top? If so, it doesn't need water. Is it super light? Is the soil dry? It might need a drink.

Indoor plants not only help clean the air, they enhance our living space with their natural beauty all year long. A great way to "green" your home!

Where can I Recycle My CFL Bulbs?

Home Depot announced on June 24, 2008 that it is offering CFL (compact flourescent light) bulb recycling at all of their stores nationwide! This is a free service that provides safe, responsible disposal of the bulbs. Just bring any unbroken, or expired CFL bulbs to the Returns desk at your local store. It's that simple.

Additionally, they are launching an in-store energy conservation program which will switch their lighting fixture showrooms to all CFL bulbs by the fall of 2008. Cost savings for this project alone will be $16 million annually. Fabulous!

Converting to CFLs will save you money. Here's a realistic statistic of what you can save by switching JUST ONE bulb from www.freecfl.com:

An incandescent bulb using 75 watts replaced with a CFL bulb that only uses 20 watts. The average cost of a kilowatt is 8 cents, and the average CFL bulb lasts 8000 hours. Over 8000 hours, a 75-watt incandescent bulb costs $48.00 to run, while a 20 watt CFL (same light output) comes in at nearly a quarter of the cost at $12.80! That is a savings of $35.00 over the life of the light bulb.

You can offset the slightly higher cost of the CFLs by gradually switching over as your old bulbs burn out. The average lifespan of an incandescent bulb is one year, versus a CFL bulb which is 8-10 years. You can use CFLs in anywhere you'd use an incandescent bulb, except for three way switches, dimmers and outdoor lights where a special CFL bulb is required.

Smellin' Like a Rose: The Nose Knows

Have you ever leaned in to sniff a bouquet of roses, only to discover they had no scent? How disappointing! Such beauty without the sweet scent that I remember once was. When I was young we had a rose bush in the back yard that required nothing (or at least that's what it got) for care and always had beautiful, abundant and fragrant blooms. I have planted mail order roses claiming to have an inviting scent and once again was disappointed. Where has the fragrant, intoxicating rose gone?

After a bit of research I have learned some interesting things. Due to demand for size, color, form and disease resistance- much of the fragrance has been inadvertently bred out of todays modern roses. I appreciate the beauty of a rose. I appreciate the beauty of all flowers. I expect my roses to smell like roses!

So what's a rose lover to do? If you want to grow your own try an heirloom variety or choose roses described as "strong" scented. Ask your florist for more fragrant roses if their selection doesn't satisfy your senses. They in turn will ask their suppliers/growers, and eventually it will come back around to what nature intended. Smellin' like a Rose!

Make a Difference this Memorial Day!

On this Memorial Day we would like to honor all of the Americans who sacrificed their lives on behalf of our nation. Please take a moment on Monday at 3pm to remember those who gave so much.

We have found some excellent programs if you would like to help support our troops right now. There are many inexpensive options such as donating old cell phones to Cell Phone for Soldiers that get turned into pre-paid phone cards or how about donating all those paperbacks to the Books For Soldiers program? Such a great way to recycle too!

If you are interested in making a financial donation please consider The Wounded Warrior Project where you will find these words: The greatest casualty is being forgotten.

Trip to Asheville & Biltmore Estate

Just got back from a trip to the mountains. This was our first time to Asheville, NC. Our timing was perfect as the Festival of Flowers was going on at the Biltmore Estate. The azaleas were in full bloom. The mansion is the main attraction (largest house in the U.S.) you could spend days in there, but I was all about the gardens. We ran across this single redwood tree in the azalea garden. Lots and lots of walking but absolutely gorgeous! Enjoy the photos!

A Few Thoughts for Earth Day 2008

What should we be doing on Earth Day? I was going to share a list of things to do for Earth Day but, I think that maybe it's about doing less. Slowing down. Smelling the roses. Unplugging. Watching the sunset. So, if you don't get the chance to go out and plant a tree or pick up litter on your street, just take a moment to appreciate the skies above or the grass beneath your feet.

Take the Think Outside the Bottle Pledge!

Hopefully most people already know that most bottled water including Dasani, Aquafina & Pure Life are no better, cleaner or safer than tap water. In fact, they are tap water. It seems ridiculous that we actually pay to buy back tap water. If we stop buying bottled water we can save money. If we stop buying bottled water we can reduce petroleum needed to manufacture and transport bottled water. If we stop buying bottled water we can reduce landfill waste. I'm just sayin'.

The link below is filled with great information & resources to help you kick the plastic water bottle and BYOB - Bring Your Own Bottle. I took the pledge today, it's quick and painless. Check it out and tell your friends. Thanks!

Unexpected Benefits from Organic Cat Food

I've tried several different cat foods/formulas over the years - adult, senior cats, indoor formula and the "naturals" in an effort to keep hairballs a.k.a. "yaks" to a minimum. We finally made the switch to an organic cat food. It's made from organic brown rice, peas, carrots and has no corn or wheat. Yes, it's a bit more expensive, but totally worth it.

Not only did my cats love the taste, but they have regained some of their playfulness that tends to lessen with age (they are 9 and 14 years old). The oldest cat, Lucy used to "get sick" on a pretty regular basis. She now only produces the occasional hairball. I am absolutely thrilled for my cats who are much happier and there's less cleanup for me!

Should you Reuse plastic water bottles?

I used to re-use my plastic water bottles over and over thinking I was helping reduce the landfill problem. Not a bad idea, but then I learned that plastic bottles can leach chemicals, are petroleum based and take 1000's of years to biodegrade, if ever. Most plastic bottles do not even get recycled.

So, that leads to the question of what to drink out of? A few options are glass, stainless steel and aluminum. None of these are perfect but are certainly better choices. We are now carrying a great line of reusable water bottles from Klean Kanteen. They are made from food grade stainless steel (which is 100% recyclable), are dishwasher safe, extremely durable, light weight and non leaching. Best of all your beverage will taste how it should, not like plastic.

Plastic, paper, barbies, OH MY!

I just have to share this. This site was mentioned in a forum and I've gone back to look at it many, many times. It's from an artist named Chris Jordan who creates images of items such as 60,000 plastic bags used in the US every 5 seconds. Everything from cigarettes to paper bags, plastic bottles, cell phones, and yes, barbies too. Disturbing and fascinating. You can find his work and more information at www.chrisjordan.com.

Green Space for Kure Beach

The old Rolling Surf Motel came down this week. The town of Kure Beach bought the vacant property that sits oceanfront and next to the boardwalk. They plan to create a public park in its place which will be a wonderful addition to the often overbuilt oceanfront towns. Read more in the IslandGazette.net.

Good News for the Brown Pelicans

I am lucky enough to see these birds on a regular basis. I was able to sneak up close enough (thanks to zoom lens) to snap this photo of them on the beach a few weeks ago. Even if your not a "bird lover", brown pelicans are fascinating to watch. They skim the top of the waves and just glide in the air and then dive straight down into the water. The federal government wants to take the brown pelican off the endangered species list. The full article can be found at the DailyPress.com.
